US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran have severely damaged Tehran’s four-hundred-year-old Golestan Palace, according to reports first released by Iran’s ISNA and Mehr news agencies. Photos of the Safavid-era palace, the Iranian capital’s only UNESCO-listed site, showed glass and debris scattered across its floors following a March 2 missile strike on nearby Arag Square, a buffer zone. UNESCO World Heritage Sites are protected under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
