The present document has been drawn up on the basis of the following: "Guide to preserving bibliographical materials and archival documents on paper: General considerations" (2015), by the History Department of the Comprehensive Information Center of the Central University of Ecuador, "Guide to preventive measures for cultural heritage property in the event of the threat of earthquakes" (2011) and "Guide to preventive mea-sures for cultural heritage property in the event of volcanic eruptions" (2015), by the Na-tional Cultural Heritage Institute (INPC) and "Contingency Handbook: Preventive measures for cultural heritage property in the event of volcanic eruptions", by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage (2016). It has been prepared for the purpose of disseminating knowledge and promoting support in recovering archives (repositories of memory) of the province of Manabí, in the framework of the "Local Capacity-Building Project for the Emergency Conservation of Historical Archives in Areas Affected by the April 16 Earth-quake (16A)".

Guide prepared by the group of World Heritage Cities to develop fire safety plans for archives, museums and libraries.

The article addresses disasters as the major cause of loss of materials in archives and libraries. The causes that cause them and the effects they cause are explained, with examples of real cases. Methods of prevention, protection and recovery of affected materials are also related.
