Climate change
Following the recommendations in the workshop report, an expert working group was set up to scope research gaps and opportunities at the interface of cultural heritage and climate change, culminating in the publication of this White Paper. This strategic document is expected to support the two JPIs to generate policy-relevant research outcomes.
Este informe resume el trabajo del grupo de expertos de los Estados miembros del Método Abierto de Coordinación (MAC) de la UE sobre el fortalecimiento de la resiliencia del patrimonio cultural frente al cambio climático. Se basa en los debates y la información aportada y aprobada por los miembros del grupo de expertos del MAC durante las reuniones celebradas entre 2021 y 2022, además de las presentaciones de los expertos externos invitados. En su informe, el grupo de expertos del MAC formula una serie de recomendaciones clave para los responsables políticos, basadas en sus conclusiones.
Esta publicación elaborada por el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Cambio Climático y Patrimonio Cultural del ICOMOS aborda la intersección entre el cambio climático y el patrimonio cultural, destacando el papel que juegan las estrategias que buscan mitigar la crisis climática en la protección del patrimonio cultural.
There are a number of local factors related to weather and climate that contribute to the degradation of cultural heritage buildings, structures and sites over time. Some of these factors are influenced by climatic changes and others manifest themselves in an acceleration of the rate of degradation. The intention of this paper is to review this situation with special reference to the Nordic countries, where typical trends resulting from climate change are shorter winters and increased precipitation throughout the year. An attempt is made to initially develop a classification of cultural heritage relevant materials and structures that are affected, with a proposed numerical scale for urgency of action. The intention is to provide information on how best to concentrate cultural heritage conservation resources in the future.

Predictions forecast changes in climate that may affect cultural heritage in the future. Not only will our underwater cultural heritage become exposed, but also our land tangible cultural heritage will be submerged: entire nations and their cultural heritage may disappear, losing their identity. In fact, climate change has the potential to increase the sea level enough by 2100 to inundate 136 sites considered by UNESCO as cultural and historical treasures. However, climate change damage on cultural heritage is not only a warning as already it has caused damages to some cultural heritage. As a consequence, and although in the realm of archaeology preservation, in situ usually is the first option, climate change challenges the norm as it has an impact on cultural heritage. This study examines the specific climate changes that oceans will most likely suffer and how they will probably affect tangible cultural heritage. It also explores cases of heritage that already are suffering the consequences. Lastly, the article proposes a new partnership natural/cultural resources and the qualification of cultural heritage as a natural resource for its preservation, establishing the same common measures against climate change.
The present study reports results from the large-scale integrated EU project “Climate for Culture”. This paper focusses on implementing high resolution regional climate models together with new building simulation tools in order to predict future outdoor and indoor climate conditions. The potential impact of gradual climate change on historic buildings and on the vast collections they contain has been assessed.
This paper presents the first research on the impact of climate change on historic buildings, archaeology, parks and gardens.
The research coincided with the publication of the UKCIP02 climate change scenarios and other studies assessing regional climate change and the impact on nature conservation and gardens.
