This illustrated manual (29pp) is the result of knowledge gained from similar field experiences gathered through ICCROM's First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis capacity building initiative.
It provides a step-by-step guide for evacuating cultural collections under extreme conditions. It is intended to assist those communities and institutions that are trying to prevent the destruction and looting of cultural objects during a crisis situation. It can be used to train others and improve emergency preparedness at cultural sites.

This guide is an abridged and adapted version of The ABC method - A risk management approach to the preservation of cultural heritage, a joint publication of the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) and ICCROM. The ABC approach to risk management has been developed and refined over a ten-year period as part of the Reducing Risks to Collections course delivered internationally by ICCROM to professionals in the cultural heritage sector, in collaboration with the ITC, the Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) and the Central Conservation Institute of Serbia (CIK). of Serbia (CIK). The purpose of this guide is to introduce recently developed concepts and tools to optimize the preservation of cultural property.
Over the past two decades, various heritage-focused institutions have conducted diverse risk assessments. Although there's a general consensus on how these evaluations transform the approach these organizations take in caring for their collections, there remains a widespread apprehension regarding the significant effort required to conduct such assessments. This work describes the development of QuiskScan, a rapid risk analysis providing an overview of a collection, its values, and vulnerabilities with relatively minimal effort. QuiskScan utilizes a matrix-based approach, assigning value and vulnerability concerning different agents of deterioration across various sectors of the collection, highlighting areas where significant collection losses might occur. Similar to other risk analyses, and aiming to foster a shared understanding of the collection and institutional risk awareness, QuiskScan requires involvement from experts throughout the organization. This method should be viewed as a tool that falls between solely relying on best practices and conducting an exhaustive risk assessment, serving as a middle ground for institutions to manage risks effectively.
The proposed framework suggests a simplified risk assessment specifically tailored for built cultural heritage properties. This framework encompasses all components necessary for a comprehensive risk analysis and can serve as a screening procedure for the preliminary assessment of a large number of properties with limited resources. Moreover, it can identify cultural heritage properties that require a more refined risk assessment demanding additional resources. Belonging to the category of qualitative methods, the proposed risk analysis framework is built upon an existing approach developed for assessing the vulnerability of critical infrastructures. The qualitative risk analysis methodology relies on a set of structured assessment flowcharts that address the key components of risk analysis: the likelihood of the hazard, asset vulnerability to the hazard, consequences of the hazard, asset value loss, and event recovery capability.To illustrate the applicability of this methodology, an example application is presented concerning seismic risk.
Report resulting from exploring the impacts of fire protection agents on cultural heritage materials. The main objectives of the project were: to establish a reproducible test protocol that could be used for future testing and that would allow reporting and evaluation of comparable test results by disparate testing entities; to gather information on the responses of selected materials when exposed to the most commonly used portable extinguishing agents over the short and long term. This overview report is a compilation of two sub-reports addressing this topic, included in this document:
