Guide for recovery of libraries and archives affected by water or fire
Comprehensive risk management is addressed in collections of the Marqués de Cerralbo House Museum, located in the city of Madrid (Spain) and belonging to the National Network of State Museums. This preliminary study focuses on the difficulties encountered throughout the author's training process within the framework of the Reducing Risks to Cultural Heritage course, seeking to bring the reader closer to this method. There are many museums and sites that today pose problems for the conservation of their works and installations: excess of visitors, space or air conditioning problems, excess pollution or vibrations caused by vehicle traffic, lack of funds or lack of conservation plans. These problems can be exacerbated in old museums, whose facilities have had to be modified to adapt to new exhibition and conservation systems.

The seismic evaluation of art objects requires a multidisciplinary approach and the definition of a methodology to assess the level of safety and the possible interventions necessary for the prevention of seismic risk, seeking a compromise between safety and conservation. This article describes a first step in this direction, in which the different aspects of the procedure, from the path of knowledge of the art object to the structural analysis, were studied on the six statues of Michelangelo located in the "Galleria dei Prigioni" (Slaves Gallery) of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. We have shown that the general principles and criteria expressed in the "Italian Guidelines for the evaluation and mitigation of seismic risk of cultural heritage", which are specifically dedicated to masonry constructions, could be usefully extended to other works of art such as statues, starting from historical research, geometrical study and characterization of materials, to the development of specific methods of analysis. This research could be the basis for future studies on the prevention of seismic damage to art objects, including minimal interventions and specific devices, such as isolation systems.

Scientific project funded by the Joint Fire Science Program studied the potential impact of wildland fire on near-surface archeological resources at six diverse sites within the Midwest Region of the National Park Service (NPS). Information was collected on fire conditions in prescribed fires on these sites. Data was collected on the impacts of fire on multiple classes of archeological materials routinely observed on sites within this region. Research encompassed different regional environments and different resource types. It is believed that by having this information, park managers will be able to more effectively balance the needs of natural and archeological resources.
